Hindi is the mother tongue of every Indian, and is understood by almost all Indians. Hindi is spoken as a first language by over 337 million people (approximately one third of India's population) and learned as a second language by millions more. It is the official language of Indian government communications and is supposed to be taught in all Indian schools where it is not the dominant language.
Hindi is descended from the ancient Sanskrit language.
The name given to an Indo-Aryan language, or a dialect continuum of languages, spoken in northern and central India. The native speakers of Hindi dialects between them account for 40% of the Indian population. Standard Hindi is one of the 22 official languages of India, and is used, along with English. In 2006, President Bush brought education of India's languages, including Hindi, to the forefront in the United States through the National Security Language Initiative, thus highlighting the need for closer ties and understanding between the two countries. This phrasebook may help lift the veil of this "exotic" language, actually a relative of English, in addition to the primary goal of helping travelers who wish to visit India.
Some facts about Hindi
Hindi became the official language of India on 26th January 1965. When India became independent, a debate arose to choose a common language for the country; the matter was put to vote and Hindi won by a single vote. Thus Hindi became national language of India. Hindi is an Indo-European language, of the Indo-Aryan subfamily. It has its roots in the classical Sanskrit language from which it derives much of its formal and technical vocabulary. The language acquired its current form over many centuries, and numerous dialectical variations still exist. In course of its development it has been influenced and enriched by many foreign languages like Dravidian, Turkish, Farsi, and Arabic.

Hindi is a very expressive language. It is also easy to learn because it is spoken exactly as it is written. Hindi is normally spoken using a combination of 52 sounds, ten vowels and 40 consonants. It is written in the Dev Nagari script, which is common to several other Indian languages as well. Various famous epics and plays of India are written in the Hindi like Ramacharitamanasa, Bhagvad Gita and the Mahabharata. Hindi literature is also very rich source of knowledge of culture, religion, spirituality etc. By the knowledge of Hindi, you can be better acquainted with Indian culture, religion and current affairs as well.
